 Today one of the most critical issues faced by airports is the inspection of runways to ensure a high standard of safety and efficiency in operations. The International Civil Aviation Organisation ("ICAO") upgraded FOD safety from recommended practice to standard in July 2005. FOD includes a wide range of materials: a part fallen off from an aircraft, a detached runway light fitting, building materials, rocks, and even wildlife. These inspections are currently conducted manually and cause disruptions to flight operations.
